The Single Malt Special are a collective of musicians, producers & writers crafting songs from self-made loops, samples & live in-studio performances. A group of four musicians who have worked together numerous times in many different guises - all with experience behind the desk, in front of the glass & on stage.
Drawing on their own experience live & in the studio Graeme Pogson, Dave Manton, Nathan Adair & Berish Bilander have created a funky, hook-based style joined with cut-up loops and analogue, vintage recording techniques that reflect the bands musical tastes in both new & retro sounds. An eclectic mix of Gorillaz, Betty Davis, Prince, Groove Armada, Massive Attack, Stevie Wonder & Otis Redding.
The group use the template set by studio perfectionists like Sly Stone or Prince but CASTING the singers best suited to the material. Not unlike Phil Spector (without the guns & crazy), or the Motown songwriters creating songs as a vehicle for Levi Stubbs.
"we not only wanted to create great grooves & riffs, we wanted to make great, strong songs"
Vocalists Pamela Wachira & Josh Teskey were bought in to couple each song with a singer who can match the intensity & feel of Single Malts rootsy flavoured tracks.
"These singers both have amazing vocal qualities & approaches that we've admired for a long time. Without a vocalist who can realise AND deliver the emotional content of a song, you have nothing"
